Microsoft Says Windows 11 is Now Up to 20% More Responsive

Microsoft

Microsoft says Windows 11 has become faster and more responsive following months of performance improvements, with particular attention to computers running on 8GB of RAM. The changes target memory usage, everyday system functions and reliability as the company works to improve the operating system’s overall user experience.

In an announcement published on October 15, 2026, Navjot Virk, Microsoft’s corporate vice president of Windows experiences, said the improvements have made Windows 11 up to 20% more responsive. The company attributes the progress partly to more efficient use of memory and system resources. The figure represents Microsoft’s reported performance gains, rather than a guarantee that every computer will run 20% faster.

Windows 11 Memory Management Gets an Upgrade

One of the central changes concerns how Windows 11 manages active data. When a computer runs short of available memory, it can move some data to storage, which is generally slower than RAM. This can make switching between applications and browser tabs feel less responsive.

Microsoft says its updated memory management can keep up to 2GB more active data in memory instead of moving it to slower storage. The company expects this to make a noticeable difference on systems with 8GB of RAM, where available memory can become a constraint during everyday work.

The Widgets feature has also been adjusted to reduce background resource consumption. On computers with 8GB of RAM or less, Widgets now load when users open them, freeing more than 200MB of memory for applications and other tasks.

However, the benefits should be assessed carefully. A report from The Next Web noted that a published hands-on test found no performance improvement on one computer with 8GB of RAM, despite Microsoft’s claims. This suggests that the results may vary by system configuration and workload.

Everyday Windows Features Also Get Improvements

Microsoft has made changes across several parts of Windows 11, including Start, File Explorer, Search and Microsoft Edge. The company says these improvements are intended to make common actions feel quicker and more dependable.

Windows Update has also been refined to reduce disruption, improve control over update timing and better coordinate restarts. Users can now reposition the taskbar along the top or sides of the display, while Windows Hello sign-in has received speed and reliability improvements.

Bluetooth connectivity is another area of focus. Microsoft says headphone pairing, reconnection, audio and calls should work more reliably, with the AirPods pairing experience reportedly up to 15 seconds faster.

Faster Windows Search is Still on the Way

Microsoft’s next major step is an improved Windows Search experience. The new version is currently available to Windows Insiders, with a broader rollout planned for later in 2026. The company has not yet provided a single release date for all users.

The wider effort reflects a practical challenge for Microsoft: improving the operating system people already use, rather than relying only on new features to make upgrades attractive. For users with modest hardware, better memory management could extend the usefulness of existing computers. Whether that translates into a noticeably faster experience will depend on how the improvements perform across different devices.
