Bret Michaels and Martina McBride Pull Out of Freedom 250 Concert Series

Bret Michaels

Five out of nine artists announced for the Freedom 250 concert series in Washington, D.C. have now withdrawn, within 48 hours of the lineup being made public. Bret Michaels and Martina McBride are the latest to pull out, citing safety concerns, threats, and misleading information about the political nature of the event. The remaining confirmed performers are Vanilla Ice, Fab Morvan of Milli Vanilli, C+C Music Factory, Flo Rida, and Kid Rock.

What you need to know at a glance:

  • The Freedom 250 concert series is part of the Great American State Fair, running June 25 to July 10, 2026 on the National Mall.
  • Freedom 250 is an organisation founded by the Trump administration to mark America’s 250th anniversary.
  • Nine artists were announced on May 27, 2026, five have since dropped out.
  • Artists say they were told the event was nonpartisan; most say that turned out to be false.
  • Bret Michaels cited safety threats; Martina McBride said the event’s political nature was misrepresented to her.

What is Freedom 250 and the Great American State Fair?

Freedom 250 is a public-private organisation founded by the Trump administration to oversee celebrations of the 250th anniversary of American independence.

The centrepiece event is the Great American State Fair, a 16-day exposition on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., running from June 25 to July 10, 2026. According to Freedom 250’s own website, the fair will feature pavilions representing all 50 states, cultural programming, military demonstrations, and educational exhibits stretching from the U.S. Capitol to the Washington Monument. Admission is free.

The July 4 event itself is planned to include remarks from President Donald Trump and what organisers describe as the largest pyrotechnics display in history.

The concert series was one part of that broader programme, announced on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, with a lineup of nine artists.

Who Was Originally on the Freedom 250 Concert Lineup?

The original lineup included Milli Vanilli, Young MC, Vanilla Ice, and C+C Music Factory, as well as Morris Day and the Time, the Commodores, Flo Rida, Bret Michaels, and country artist Martina McBride.

The bill leaned heavily on artists who were prominent in the 1980s and 1990s. Kid Rock, who has performed at Trump events previously, was also included.

Why Did Artists Start Dropping Out of Freedom 250?

The withdrawals started almost immediately after the announcement.

By Wednesday night, two artists had already backed out. Morris Day of Morris Day and The Time said he would not be performing. “It’s A No For Me,” his official Facebook account posted. Young MC also said he would not participate, writing: “I have informed my agents that I will not be performing at the Freedom 250 event. The artists were never told about any political involvement with the event.”

The Commodores followed, posting on their social media: “The Commodores will not be performing at the Great American State Fair,” adding that they hoped to perform “in the near future at an event that is not so politically charged.”

The core issue running through every withdrawal is the same: artists say they were told the event was nonpartisan, and discovered after agreeing to perform that it was not.

Although the language on the Freedom 250 website describes all planned events as nonpartisan, artists announced as participants were hit with a wave of backlash from fans who viewed the shows as partisan or MAGA-aligned, given that the organisation was founded by Donald Trump.

Why Did Martina McBride Pull Out of Freedom 250?

Martina McBride shared a statement on Instagram explaining her decision. “I will not be performing at the Great American State Fair on June 25th. I was presented with an opportunity to perform at a nonpartisan event but that turned out to be misleading. I asked lots of questions and was assured that this was a nonpartisan event that was meant to celebrate ALL 50 states. In my mind I thought this was a great way to celebrate the states and also bring people together in the way that only music can. I saw it as just a bigger version of so many state fairs I have performed at over the years, celebrating community and what makes each state special. Yesterday, things started changing and what we were told is, in fact, not what is happening.”

McBride also addressed her fans directly: “It greatly upsets me that any fan who has been moved by my music may now feel like I’m abandoning the meaning behind those songs. I assure you, that is not the case. I appreciate every single fan who has reached out. I hope to get back to the DC area very soon.”

McBride was the fourth artist to announce her withdrawal, making her exit on Thursday, May 28.

Why Did Bret Michaels Pull Out of Freedom 250?

Bret Michaels posted his statement late on May 28. He explained that when the opportunity was originally presented to his team, “it was described as a celebration of our country through music and a chance to honor our veterans, active military, first responders, teachers and hardworking Americans from all walks of life.” As the son of a veteran, he said, that was something he had always been honoured to support.

Michaels wrote: “Unfortunately, what was presented to us as a celebration of our country has evolved into something much more divisive than what I agreed to be a part of. Concerns have also been raised regarding the safety of my fans, band, crew, family and myself, including threats that are completely unfounded and unforgivable. Because of that, I have made the difficult decision to step away from this performance.”

Michaels added: “This isn’t about politics. It’s about staying true to what I’ve always believed in. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. That’s one of the freedoms our veterans fought for and something I’ve always respected. But as a father, friend and bandmate, I have to take threats and safety concerns seriously.”

Michaels was scheduled to perform on July 3. He became the fifth artist to withdraw from the Freedom 250 concert series.

He also told fans in Washington, D.C. that he intends to return and perform there under different circumstances, with the focus on music rather than politics.

Who Is Still Performing at the Freedom 250 Great American State Fair?

After five withdrawals, the only artist who had a representative confirm their appearance was Vanilla Ice, whose management told CBS News: “Vanilla Ice is contracted and will perform at the Great American Fair at the National Mall on Friday, June 26. He is proud to help celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary! Everyone is welcome to attend and celebrate the USA’s Birthday and our Freedom!”
