Jessica Chastain’s ‘Other Mommy’ Trailer Leaves Audiences Shaken

Jessica Chastain’

If you recently bought a ticket to see Christopher Nolan’s epic The Odyssey in theaters, chances are you walked out talking about a completely different movie.

Universal Pictures debuted the first official trailer for Other Mommy, a chilling new supernatural horror starring Oscar winner Jessica Chastain, exclusively in theaters before Nolan’s film. The unexpected preview sparked an instant wave of reaction across social media, with shocked moviegoers calling it one of the most unsettling theater experiences in recent memory.

Directed by Rob Savage (Host, The Boogeyman) and produced by horror heavyweight James Wan (The Conjuring, Insidious), the film leans into a deeply psychological, claustrophobic fear: what happens when something sinister takes on the exact face of the person you trust most?

What is ‘Other Mommy’ About?

The film adapts Josh Malerman’s 2024 horror novel Incidents Around the House. At the center of the plot is eight-year-old Bela (played by Arabella Olivia Clark), a young girl living in a household already strained by marital tension.

Her life turns upside down when an entity begins emerging from her bedroom closet. The entity speaks with her mother Ursula’s voice and wears her exact face (both played by Chastain), but its movements and tone feel disturbingly off.

Day after day, the presence hauntingly asks Bela for permission to “go inside her heart.” Chastain plays both roles, the protective mother trying to hold her family together, and the contorting imposter taking over her life.

Why the Trailer is Scaring Audiences Out of Their Seats

Instead of relying on cheap slasher tricks, the two-minute teaser creates a suffocating mood from the start.

It opens with an everyday moment: Chastain standing in a sunlit kitchen making pasta, casually asking her daughter if she remembers being in her tummy. But the mood turns cold the second she leans in and softly asks, “Can I go into your heart?”

Chastain’s performance carries most of the terror. She bounces between a warm parent and an unhinged, uncanny double, using subtle facial twitches and unnatural smiles to creep out the viewer.

One shot in particular caused gasps in crowded theaters, showing Chastain’s character crouching under a kitchen table in a bizarre, spider-like stance right after nearly burning the house down. Beyond the immediate scares, the footage leaves you wondering whether the entity is a literal demon or a manifestation of a family falling apart.

Social Media Reactions: Audiences Sound Off

Within hours of the trailer hitting theaters, moviegoers rushed to TikTok and X (formerly Twitter) to share their reactions. Many admitted they were caught completely off guard because they had no idea the book was being adapted into a feature film.

The online consensus was immediate:

“I just got out of ‘The Odyssey’ and my main takeaway is that trailer for ‘Other Mommy’ with Jessica Chastain. It had the creepiest jump scare I’ve ever seen in my life.”

“That trailer was an insane way to almost choke on my popcorn before the main movie even started. I won’t be sleeping for a while.”

Some creators even posted videos jokingly warning future theatergoers to close their eyes during the pre-show previews.

Cast and Production Background

Beyond Chastain’s dual lead performance, Other Mommy boasts a strong dramatic cast:

  • Jay Duplass (Transparent, Industry) plays Daddo, Bela’s frantic father.
  • Arabella Olivia Clark stars as eight-year-old Bela.
  • Arian Moayed (Succession), Dichen Lachman (Severance), and screen icon Karen Allen (Raiders of the Lost Ark) round out the supporting lineup.

The screenplay was penned by Nathan Elston (Succession), with Blumhouse Atomic Monster producing alongside Universal Pictures.

Release Date: When Can You See It?

Other Mommy is set for an exclusive theatrical release on October 9.

If the viral theatrical response to its initial teaser is any indicator, this psychological horror entry is forming up to be one of the most talked-about films of the upcoming Halloween spooky season.
