Utah Winter Weekend 2027: NHL Winter Classic Grows into a Four-Day Sports and Concert Event

Utah Winter Weekend 2027_ NHL

Utah’s 2027 NHL Winter Classic is no longer a single game. Smith Entertainment Group (SEG), which owns the Utah Mammoth and Utah Jazz, has built it into a four-day event with NHL hockey, NBA basketball and a Post Malone concert.

What is Utah Winter Weekend?

Winter Weekend is SEG’s branded four-day sports and entertainment event, running December 30, 2026, to January 2, 2027. It bundles five attractions from the Jazz and Mammoth calendars.

The games and the concert are sold separately. SEG markets them as one connected trip.

The aim is simple. SEG wants fans to treat Utah as a destination for the whole New Year holiday, not just for one game.

What is the Winter Weekend Schedule?

The schedule runs across two venues, Delta Center in downtown Salt Lake City and Rice-Eccles Stadium on the University of Utah campus.

Date

Event

Venue

December 30

Jazz vs. New York Knicks (defending NBA champions)

Delta Center

December 31

Mammoth vs. Colorado Avalanche (NHL Winter Classic)

Rice-Eccles Stadium

December 31

New Year’s Eve concert with Post Malone

Delta Center

January 1

Jazz vs. Boston Celtics

January 2

Mammoth vs. Vancouver Canucks

The format gives visiting fans several reasons to stay longer. It also gives local businesses more days of visitor spending.

Ryan Smith, SEG’s chairman and CEO, said the group sees a chance to create four days of sports and entertainment that people will travel to Utah to experience and remember.

What is the NHL Winter Classic, and Why Is It in Utah?

The NHL Winter Classic is the league’s annual outdoor game, played around the New Year. Utah’s version is a milestone for the Mammoth, who moved from Arizona to Utah in 2024.

The NHL awarded Utah the 2027 game in January 2026. The league pointed to how quickly the franchise has taken root and how strongly locals have backed it.

The Mammoth have sold out their home games. Renovations have also made Delta Center a better fit for hockey.

The outdoor game takes place at Rice-Eccles Stadium, which holds more than 54,000 for college football. It will be the team’s first outdoor game, against Colorado.

For the NHL, the date puts a major event in the New Year holiday window. For Utah, it puts the state in front of fans well beyond its current base.

How Does Winter Weekend Fit SEG’s Development Strategy?

SEG uses pro sports as an anchor for downtown development. Smith has described teams as community assets that draw crowds and create activity beyond the games.

Under that approach, hockey, basketball and concerts all drive the same things:

  • Visitor demand
  • Hospitality spending
  • Foot traffic around major venues

SEG’s ambitions don’t stop at two teams. Smith has said he is interested in bringing Major League Baseball to Salt Lake City.

Winter Weekend is the first real test of this strategy. Several major events over four days should show whether SEG can build a destination rather than rely on one fixture.

Will Winter Weekend Boost Utah’s Economy?

Nobody knows yet. The economic impact depends on three things:

  • How many people attend
  • How much visitors spend
  • How much of that spending reaches other local businesses

The longer-term measure is whether the event keeps visitors interested after the weekend ends. Utah is competing with other cities for major sporting events, and Winter Weekend is its bid to hold its place in that market.
