How Does Jack Ryan Stop Starling in Ghost War?

Jack Ryan

Spoiler Warning: This article contains full spoilers for Jack Ryan: Ghost War. Read at your own risk.

Three years after leaving the CIA, Jack Ryan is back. Not because he wanted to be, but because someone had to be.

Jack Ryan: Ghost War dropped on Amazon Prime Video on May 20, 2026, and it picks up exactly where the emotional weight of the TV series left off. Jack is in New York, trying to live a quiet life that clearly does not suit him. His relationship with Cathy Mueller ended off-screen. Retirement has not taken. And then a mission pulls him back in, one connected to a ghost from James Greer’s past that never fully went away.

Here is everything that happens, and how it all ends.

What is Starling in Jack Ryan: Ghost War?

Starling is not a person, it is a rogue black ops unit. And it has history.

Greer shut the unit down 20 years before the events of Ghost War. Whatever Starling was doing warranted being buried completely. The film picks up when that buried operation resurfaces, now operating outside any official sanction and actively dangerous.

Liam Crown leads Starling’s forces in the present day. He is the main physical threat Jack faces throughout the film, relentless, well-resourced, and operating with the kind of ruthlessness that comes from years of working in institutional shadows.

The unit’s continued existence depends on staying hidden, and that requires an insider. Starling has one: MI6 Deputy Chief Andrew Spear, who functions as the operation’s inside traitor, giving Starling access and protection from within British intelligence.

What Does Jack Ryan Do in Dubai?

The mission takes Jack to two locations, Dubai and London, and the Dubai sequence is where the climax happens.

Jack, MI6 agent Emma Marlow, and Mike November travel to Dubai to retrieve and upload Starling’s intelligence to the CIA. The operation requires them to fight their way through a skyscraper to reach Nigel’s server room.

This is not a surgical covert extraction. By the time they reach the server room, Crown and his men have engaged them directly. Greer leads a second team to support Jack against Starling, but Liam Crown and his men ambush them, and Emma is wounded during the confrontation.

The mission nearly collapses at multiple points. Emma being shot removes one key asset from the fight. Crown gets close enough to Jack to nearly end everything.

How Does the CIA Stop Starling?

This comes down to two simultaneous things happening at the right moment.

Jack successfully uploads the intel with help from his CIA contact Patrick Klinghoffer. Crown nearly kills him before Greer’s team arrives and guns down Starling’s forces.

The intel upload is the operational kill shot, it strips Starling of its secrecy and gives the CIA everything it needs to dismantle the network. The CIA uncovers MI6 Deputy Chief Andrew Spear as Starling’s inside traitor, giving the agency the means to dismantle the entire operation and successfully stop Starling.

Exposing Spear is what closes the loop. Without the insider, Starling has no institutional protection. With the full intelligence package uploaded, the CIA has the evidence to act.

Does Jack Ryan Kill Liam Crown?

Yes. And the way it happens matters to what the film is saying about Jack.

Jack coldly executes the mortally wounded Crown, proving he can make the hard decisions required to be “the tip of the spear.”

This is a deliberate character beat. The entire film builds toward a question about whether Jack Ryan, the analyst, the person who always tried to do things the right way, has it in him to operate at the sharp end without hesitation. Executing Crown is the answer. It is not framed as triumphant. It is framed as a threshold Jack crosses, and knows he has crossed.

What Happens to Jack Ryan at the End of Ghost War?

The film ends with James Greer recommending Jack Ryan to the President of the United States for the position of Deputy Director while traveling to Dubai. Jack accepts the role, and he and Greer return to CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia.

This is a significant moment for anyone familiar with the broader Ryanverse. The development mirrors Clear and Present Danger, where Greer, played by James Earl Jones in the 1994 film, nominated Jack Ryan, portrayed by Harrison Ford, for Deputy Director of Intelligence. Ghost War recreates that dynamic with Krasinski and Wendell Pierce, giving the franchise a bookend that Tom Clancy readers will recognise immediately.

Jack had previously served as Deputy Director under Elizabeth Wright but left the position to return to the field during Season 4 of the original series. Wright later chose Greer, her mentor, to take over the role.

Ghost War also confirms that Jack’s relationship with Dr. Cathy Mueller ended off-screen before the film’s events, leaving Jack single once again. His Wall Street career ends here too. He is back in, fully.

What Happens to James Greer?

James Greer takes over as CIA Director following Elizabeth Wright’s death, and appoints Jack Ryan as his Deputy Director. The franchise finally places these two men in the roles that Tom Clancy readers always knew they were building toward.

The relationship between Jack and Greer is central to Ghost War’s emotional core. The ending reinforces the renewed partnership and trust between Jack and Greer after Ryan had questioned whether he could still trust Greer during the events of the story. Whatever fractures existed between them going into the mission are resolved by the end of it.

What Happens to Mike November?

Mike November permanently returns to the CIA alongside Jack Ryan and James Greer, thanks to Greer’s support at the end of Ghost War.

Mike’s arc in the film is its own story. After Season 4, Mike had been working as a private security contractor for Greer, although Emma Marlow revealed that dangerous people in Dubrovnik, Croatia, were pursuing him. He comes back into the fold not just as backup muscle but as genuine family.

During a private conversation with Greer, Mike points out that their constant disagreements about right and wrong hide a deeper truth: the three men are the only family they will ever truly have. That line lands. By the end of Ghost War, the trio of Jack, Greer, and Mike is stronger and more formally established than at any point in the series.

What Happens to Emma Marlow?

Emma Marlow survives the confrontation at the Dubai skyscraper despite being shot by one of Crown’s men. Sienna Miller plays the MI6 officer throughout the film, and her character functions as both a field asset and the bridge between the CIA and British intelligence, a relationship made more complicated by the revelation that her own deputy chief was Starling’s traitor.

Is Jack Ryan: Ghost War the End of the Franchise?

No; at least, not if John Krasinski has anything to do with it.

Krasinski revealed to ScreenRant that he is open to continuing the franchise with more films following Ghost War, suggesting Jack Ryan’s story may continue beyond the events of the film: “I would love to (continue Jack Ryan as a film series). I think that we all found that being in a different format just means you can tell different kinds of stories. I think we have more stories to tell.”

The film format appears to suit where the character is now. Rather than renew the show for a fifth season, Amazon and Paramount opted to continue the franchise through feature films after the television series concluded on June 30, 2023. Ghost War was officially greenlit in February 2025.
